Roeddent yn siarad am ddynes o\u2019r enw Gwen ferch Ellis \u2014 iachawraig, nyddwr ac yn \u00f4l rhai gwrach. Nid stori am ysgubau neu grochanau\u2019n ffrwtian yw hon ond stori\u2019n ymwneud \u00e2 pherlysiau, swynion a chalon a oedd yn rhy feiddgar i\u2019r oes yr oedd yn byw ynddi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\ud83e\uddf6<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;Gwehyddes Iach\u00e2d a Gobaith<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wedi ei geni tua 1552 ar fryniau mwyn Llandyrnog, roedd Gwen yn byw mewn byd lle roedd ffydd a ll\u00ean gwerin yn dawnsio gyda\u2019i gilydd ar bob aelwyd. Yn ferch i Ellis fe g\u00e2i ei hadnabod nid am dywyllwch ond am y golau a ddeuai i\u2019w chymdogion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gyda bysedd ystwyth a hen enaid, nid dim ond brethyn roedd Gwen yn ei nyddu ond iach\u00e2d. Roedd yn gwneud eli ar gyfer esgyrn dolurus, plasteri ar gyfer briwiau a swynion a g\u00e2i eu sibrwd yn ysgafn dros berlysiau a g\u00e2i eu casglu ar doriad gwawr. Roedd pentrefwyr yn cyfnewid gwl\u00e2n a menyn am ei bendithion \u2014 a oedd yn rhywbeth bach i\u2019w gyfnewid mewn gwlad lle roedd cred cyn hyned \u00e2\u2019r mynyddoedd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ond mae dwy ochr i bob swyn ac ym myd Gwen gallai caredigrwydd droi yn berygl yn gyflym iawn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2712\ufe0f<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;Y Swyn Papur a Chysgod Amheuaeth<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Un diwrnod fe ymddangosodd swyn papur rhyfedd yng nghartref Thomas Mostyn, tirfeddiannwr pwerus. Roedd wedi ei ysgrifennu am yn \u00f4l \u2014 efallai y byddai Gwen wedi disgrifio hyn fel tric i amddiffyn \u2014 ond i eraill roedd yn arwydd o ewyllys ddrwg. Lledaenodd ofn fel t\u00e2n gwyllt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Roedd sibrydion yn cysylltu Gwen \u00e2 Jane Conway, gweddw afieithus a oedd benben \u00e2 Mostyn. Yn fuan daeth y sibrydion yn gyhuddiadau a lledaenwyd enw Gwen fel enw gwrach. Mewn byd a oedd yn ysgwyd rhwng yr hen ffydd a\u2019r drefn newydd, roedd sibrydion o\u2019r fath i\u2019w clywed yn gryf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2696\ufe0f<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;Achos yr Iachawraig<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pan ddaethpwyd \u00e2 Gwen gerbron y llys yn Ninbych fe ymgasglodd y bonedd, clerigwyr a chymdogion, rhai mewn ofn ac eraill mewn tosturi.&nbsp; Fe safodd saith tyst yn ei herbyn, gan honni fod ei swynion wedi torri esgyrn, ei bod wedi rhoi swyn ar gwrw a\u2019i bod hyd yn oed wedi llonyddu calon dyn ifanc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ac eto safai Gwen yn falch \u2014 ei llais yn glir, ei chalon yn gadarn. Adroddodd ei swynion yn y Gymraeg, gan egluro mai eu bwriad oedd iach\u00e1u ac nid niweidio. Roedd ei dewrder yn fath tawel o hud \u2014 un na allai unrhyw grocbren ei ddistewi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ond nid oedd y gyfraith yn garedig tuag at ferched a oedd yn meddu ar wybodaeth wedi ei lapio mewn dirgelwch. O dan Ddeddf Dewiniaeth 1563, cafwyd Gwen yn euog a hi oedd y ddynes gyntaf i gael ei chrogi ar sgw\u00e2r tref Dinbych lle roedd s\u0175n chwerthin a marchnadoedd unwaith i\u2019w clywed.&nbsp; Dim ond 42 oed oedd hi ac yn ei bywyd byr roedd eisoes wedi colli dau \u0175r a chwaer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udd6f\ufe0f<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;Yr Ysbryd sy\u2019n Parhau<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mae canrifoedd wedi mynd heibio, ac eto mae stori Gwen ferch Ellis yn dal i lithro drwy ddyffrynnoedd Cymru fel niwl yr hydref. Mae\u2019n parhau yn symbol nid o ofn ond o gryfder \u2014 yn atgof o\u2019r merched y cafodd eu doethineb ei gamgymryd am ddrygioni.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mewn gwirionedd, swyn mwyaf Gwen oedd tosturi. Nid oedd ei \u201cdewiniaeth\u201d yn ddim mwy nac iach\u00e2d, ei \u201cswynion\u201d yn hen ganeuon ei hynafiaid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Felly wrth i leuad yr Hydref godi fry ar Galan Gaeaf, gwrandewch am siffrwd y dail a mwmial y droell nyddu. Allwn ni ddim ond dyfalu beth yw\u2019r rheswm. A allai hyn fod oherwydd yr iaith Gymraeg?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yn ei lyfr &#8211; <em>Witches and Witch Hunts Through the Ages<\/em> mae\u2019r awdur Phil Carradice yn cynnig sawl eglurhad. Mae\u2019n credu mai\u2019r iaith Gymraeg oedd i gyfrif yn rhannol o leiaf am hyn. \u201cYchydig iawn o archwilwyr neu farnwyr a oedd yn siarad Cymraeg,\u201d meddai Phil o Fro Morgannwg. Mae\u2019n mynd ymlaen i ddweud \u201cRoedd Merched yn yr Oesoedd Canol yn cael eu cam-drin, does dim gair arall am hynny.\u201d Mae\u2019n mynd ymlaen i ddweud mai\u2019r cymhelliant dros erlid y merched oedd \u201ccasineb at wragedd a hefyd trachwant\u201d.
