Pedal Through Paradise: Cycling in Denbighshire

This week sees the announcement of the outline route and start and finish locations of the 2027 Tour de France, when Wales will host the world’s most prestigious cycling race for the first time. The Wales stage will start in Welshpool and finish in Cardiff, on 4 July 2027, marking the third stage and climax of the UK Grand Depart. The event will be the biggest free-to-spectate sporting event ever to take place in the UK.

To coincide with the confirmation of the route, it’s also been announced today that Geraint Thomas OBE will take on a new role as Wales’ Cycling Ambassador in the run-up to the Tour.

With that in mind we wanted to explore what our corner of Wales can offer cyclists.

Whether you’re a local looking for new ways to explore your home turf or a visitor planning an active getaway, Denbighshire in North Wales offers a cycling experience for everyone. From traffic-free coastal routes perfect for family days out to rugged forest trails and scenic country lanes, this corner of Wales has become a must-visit destination for cyclists of all ages and abilities.

Coastal Routes & Family Friendly Riding

Start your adventure on the North Wales Coast — a mainly flat, traffic-free stretch of the National Cycle Network that runs through Denbighshire’s seaside towns. Cyclists can glide along the promenade at places like Prestatyn and Rhyl, enjoying wide views across the Irish Sea and gentle riding that’s ideal for families or casual visitors.

In Rhyl, the local Bike Hub offers bike hire throughout the year, so you don’t even need to bring your own wheels. Ride out from the harbour and follow NCN Route 5 along the coast — perfect for picnics, beach stops, and seaside cafés.

There is also an award winning centre for cycling called Marsh Tracks in Rhyl this has a road cycling track, a BMX track and a mountain biking track and can offer coaching.

 Mountain Biking & Off-Road Challenges

If you’re after more adrenaline, Denbighshire delivers with world-class mountain biking:

  • Coed Llandegla Forest — a nationally recognised mountain bike centre with purpose-built trails for all skill levels, from flowing singletrack to technical terrain. The site also offers bike hire, training, an award-winning café, and bike shop facilities.
  • Clwydian Range & Hiraethog — these upland areas boast miles of bridleway networks through hills, forests and moorland with routes classified from easy to demanding. It’s a spectacular backdrop for beginners and seasoned riders alike.
  • Llyn Brenig — the reservoir area has a family-friendly network of waymarked trails that combine cycling with stunning views and picnic stops. Bike hire is available at the visitor centre, making it a great option for flexible itineraries.

These mountain and forest trails aren’t just for hardcore riders — there’s plenty of variety so you can choose your challenge as you go.

Scenic Loop Routes & Countryside Circuits

Beyond purpose-built tracks, Denbighshire has a wealth of scenic circuits ideal for day rides:

  • The Rhyl and North Denbighshire Community Cycle Ride is about a 20-mile loop linking Rhyl, Prestatyn, Dyserth, St Asaph, and Rhuddlan — with plenty of character, countryside views, and café stops.
  • Quiet country lanes through rolling farmland and the Clwyd Valley provide peaceful rides where you can also explore historic market towns and local pubs.

 Local Travel & Everyday Cycling

Cycling in Denbighshire isn’t just about recreation — there’s also a strong Active Travel movement encouraging locals to cycle for everyday journeys such as shopping, school runs, or commuting. The county council works under the Active Travel (Wales) Act to plan and map out routes that make biking a genuine option for daily life.

For residents, opportunities like free Bikeability training (for both kids and adults) make it easier and safer to cycle on roads and local routes.

 Tips for Visitors & Locals

Best times to ride
🌼 Spring and summer offer long daylight hours and brighter weather perfect for touring the coast or forest trails. Autumn brings beautiful colours across the hills and moorland.

Pack wisely
Denbighshire’s weather can change quickly — layers, waterproofs and good footwear make a difference, especially on forest or moorland trails.

Respect the land
Whether you’re cycling on bridleways, shared paths, or quiet lanes, follow local countryside codes and be mindful of walkers, livestock, and other trail users.
