Deeside is the name given to a predominantly industrial conurbation of towns and villages in Flintshire and Cheshire on the Wales–England border lying near the canalised stretch of the River Dee that flows from neighbouring Chester into the Dee Estuary. These include Connah’s Quay, Shotton, Queensferry, along with neighbouring villages and towns.
Seafaring & shipbuilding were once the principal industry in Connah’s Quay with three slipways between The Rock and The Old Quay House. Between 1857 and 1957, over 50 ships were built here, some of which were up to 300 tonnes! The main cargo would have been bricks and tiles from Buckley to Northop Hall but they also carried a variety of other loads including timber, pig iron to manure. The Heritage Centre within Connah’s Quay Library display’s artefacts of local interest relating to the industrial history of Connah’s Quay.
Deeside is home to Wepre Country Park, 160 acres of green space nestled in the heart of Connahs Quay. Explore Wepre Brook, or just take a walk through the remains of the grand estate of Wepre Hall and its attractive woodlands to the 12th century ruins of Ewloe Castle. Wepre Park has the best free children’s playground in the region, two football pitches, a well managed fishing pool and a visitor centre to help you enjoy your visit. Just a few minutes down the road is Deeside Leisure Centre fully equipped with a sports hall, outdoor pitches, indoor sports and an Olympic sized ice rink catering for a variety of sports and activities.
Deeside Leisure Centre also has Wales’ first public day spa; Afon Spa; where you can relax and unwind in the perfect destination for escaping stress and discovering tranquility.
Take the coastal path for a leisurely walk or cycle through Deeside along the North Wales coast towards the town of Flint or in the opposite direction follow the river into the walled city of Chester taking in the natural environment rich with wildlife.
Within Deeside and well worth a visit is Greenacres Animal Park. Meet a range of domesticated, zoological and farmyard animals, get up close and personal in their pets corner and enjoy funfair rides, a play barn and other attractions throughout the year.
For the adventurers The Boardroom Climbing is a modern dedicated indoor bouldering and climbing centre for climbers of all ages. Available is a competition bouldering wall, lead climbing and top ropes, IFSC speed climbing wall (10m) and a Psicobloc, an 8m high free solo wall.
