Bodelwyddan
Easily accessible from the A55 expressway, Bodelwyddan has two great attractions: Bodelwyddan Castle (please note this is not open to the public at the moment as an attraction however you can stay at the hotel) and the amazing ‘Marble Church’. Among the most striking and extravagantly furnished Victorian Gothic Revival churches in Britain, this much-visited showpiece was built regardless of expense by Lady Willoughby de Broke of Bodelwyddan Castle.
Treimeirchion
An attractive hillside village, whose church displays 17th century painted glass portraits, the imposing monument of the 14th century priest-bard Dafydd Ddu, and a renowned wonder-working cross head. Ffynnon Beuno holy well flows at the southern edge of the village, near limestone cliff-caves which once sheltered prehistoric people. The parish also boasts several fine mansions, including Brynbella (private) built for Dr. ‘Dictionary’ Johnson’s friend Mrs. Thrale, and across the fields the remains of Bach y Graig. Reputedly the first brick building in Wales, this ‘wonder-house’ was raised by the Elizabethan plutocrat Richard Clough: only the imposing gatehouse-cum-warehouse and farm buildings now survive.
